** [bugs:#477] use "comp -build" with nmh 1.6?**

nmh 1.6 added a "-build" option to comp(1). We could use that for composing new messages, rather than the mechanism that went into MH-E 8.6.

My only hesitation is that we still need to support nmh 1.5, and that mechanism should also work for nmh 1.6 and later versions. So changing MH-E to use -build with comp(1) could just be adding complexity for little gain.

Thanks, Mike.

A couple of thoughts:

1. We put this on hold for a couple of years and then drop support for
older versions of nmh.

2. We switch to the -build option now and bump the major version (MH-E
9.0).

Given that one of the MH-E philosophies is not to reproduce work that is
already performed by MH, I think I might be leaning for #2, but I'd like
to hear from others.

MH-E works with both nmh and GNU mailutils. Does GNU mailutils hae the
'comp -build' functionality?
If GNU mailutils will also support 'comp -build' then move to MH-E 9.0
and we are done. If not, we wait.
Good point, Mark. Thanks!

Hi Folks,

To the best of my undertanding, the GNU Mailutils package
(available from http://http://mailutils.org/) is also still
supported by MH-E and does NOT have the new 'comp -build'
capability.

If someone wants to push for GNU Mailutils adoption of that feature in
Mailutils-3 which is currently undergoing design/development, then I
have no objections to migration MH-E to make use of the capability.

Failing that consensus of design, I believe we should not necessarily
tie MH-E directly to nmh 1.6 feature sets by default.

Yep. Agreed. Thanks.

I agree with Mark's point about Mailutils support.

Another consideration is users who build Emacs from source but get nmh
(or Mailutils) from their distro. Ubuntu 14.04, which will be supported
until 2019, ships with nmh 1.5. This might be a minor consideration,
though--I don't have a sense of how many people fall into this category.

In any event, it seems like choice #1 treats our users better.

I can look into Mailutils support for "comp -build" unless someone else
wants to take that on.

It turns out that the Mailutils-3 beta releases already support "comp
-build". I don't know what other distros are shipping, but Debian
stable has 2.99.97.

I'll note this in the ticket.

Mailutils-3 will have support for "comp -build" (it's already available via the beta releases).

nmh 1.6 added a "-build" option to comp(1).

It looks like mailutils 2.x also supports "comp -build", though I haven't tested it.
