I recently moved my MH-E setup from a PPC machine running Ubuntu to an Opteron running Fedora. This week I got around to setting up indexed search and am having a few issues.

I used swish++ on Ubuntu, and loved it.

Fedora doesn't seem to have swish or mairix, but does have namazu, so I gave that a try. The MH-E manual describes setting up namazu, and I followed those instructions.

The search instructions for namazu should specify that it doesn't use a Search buffer. MH-E asks for a namazu regexp instead \(I guess like grep, although I haven't used grep as a search program in MH-E\).

Because there is no Search buffer, it seems you can't use pick instead of the indexed search. Pick isn't bound to a key sequence anymore either.

namazu's search syntax is kind of strange, however. It defaults to a keyword search. To specify a regexp you need to feed /regexp/ to namazu.

namazu allows simple field searches in mail messages, by specifying +\{field\}:text, like +from:***@example

namazu also allows Boolean connectives like and, or, and not. Unfortunately, it seems you can't combine Boolean and field searches.

To top it all off, the version of namazu I have installed doesn't seem to actually work as advertised \(namazu-2.0.14-3\). It seems to match messages at random. It may have gotten confused after I packed my inbox, but running the documented indexing command after the pack didn't fix the searches.

I ended up downloading and compiling swish++ 6.1.4 from source, and it's working nicely. Both indexing and searching are faster than with namazu.
